Summer Fun & Frolic Programs

June 7—July 30, 2010

This long time program will be offered over 8 weeks for children completing grades 3 through 8, plus siblings completing grades K-2. We hope to be able to serve up to 40 children. Primary programming will be focused on reading and math through the Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Center, in collaboration with the National Council on Educating Black Children.

Other focus areas include African American heritage, fitness and health, the Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, community service, and character development.

Anticipated field trips include the

· Indiana State Museum

· Children’s Museum

· Peace Learning Center

· Skating

· Movies

Optional lessons in tennis are offered for an additional fee through collaboration with the National Junior Tennis League. Local students from various universities will provide leadership, with potential volunteer assistance from upper class high school students.

We also host an annual Community Day a week before school resumes from summer vacation; lunch is provided and loaded backpacks/school supplies are given to students in grades Kg-12.

Inner City Music School

Professional jazz musicians are doing for young people what was done for them—sharing their time and their talent at no charge to help children and youth discover gifts within themselves and hone musical skills.  A variety of instruments are taught, sometimes through partnerships with local university training programs.  Every student will participate in choir and music history.  Periodic performances will occur so confidence can develop and supporters can witness the growth and progress in the students.  Ages 5-18 years old.  Hazel Johnson Strong is the founder/director of the ICMS.

Simba House

The Simba House is a martial arts school that places its emphasis on the learning, practicing and living the principles of internal Martial Arts. The mission of the Simba House is “Individual commitment to one’s self improvement by training the body, mind and inner force. In the process: prepare one’s self to defend, protect and be proactive in any situation.” Its primary vehicle for progression in the art is the consistent focus and application of Tao Yen Fu and Tai’Chi. The student base of the Simba class varies in age range from 6 to 65, with the majority of the students younger than 18. Though the physical practice of martial arts is the largest component of its work, the internal work is complemented with a myriad of external activities that perpetuate similar harmony. Survival/recreational camping, fishing, community outreach, African drum and dance and public demonstrations, are staples of its program as well. Kahlil Mwaafrika heads this program.

ESP Kid’s Club

3rd Saturdays from March to November, 10 AM – 11:30 AM (except July 24)

Leap Consulting will present a financial workshop to the middle school and high school youth not yet working. The goals are to increase economic literacy of Black youth in the grades 6-9 or 10 before reaching age 15 or starting to work, to help young people understand how to earn and save money, and provide our children the opportunity to have a financial head start. The objectives are to have at least 15-25 participants by year’s end, have at least 80 % participate in a savings account by year’s end. This is sponsored through the Alpha Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
